Majestic Arenal

We were there for almost one week and only once did Arenal show up in all its splendour. We were used to seeing this view with such impenetrable clouds that it was a shock indeed to know that the volcano was there all along. Arenal is an active stratovolcano in northwestern Costa Rica, around 90 km northwest of San José, in the province of Alajuela, and 7 kilometers from the town of La Fortuna. Its 1,633 meter volcanic cone strikes an imposing figure on the landscape. Arenal is the youngest volcano in Costa Rica estimated to be less than 7,500 years old.
