I have a soft spot for woodpeckers. I do not think it has to do with me watching too many cartoons of Woodie Woodpecker when I grew up, or maybe it does. Regardless they are just beautiful birds.
The red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) is a medium-sized woodpecker of the Picidae family. They are common in many Eastern woodlands and forests, from old stands of oak and hickory to young hardwoods and pines. They will also often venture from forests to appear at backyard feeders. Adult males have a red cap going from the bill to the nape; females have a red patch on the nape and another above the bill. The reddish tinge on the belly is though not as easily seen.
