About Imma, the photographer
“You don’t take a photograph, you make it.” Ansel Adams
Since I was a child, I have been fascinated by nature and its beauty: the colors and the shapes, the harmonious and the dramatic, the big living creatures and the tiny microscopic organisms. I grew up watching several TV programs filmed by naturalists like Jacques Cousteau, Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, David Attenborough among many. I wanted to be like them and share that beauty with everybody. I treasured my sticker albums Natural Wonders of the World, Natural Wonders of Ancient Civilizations and, my favorite, Fascinating Life.
No wonder I became a biologist and a scientist.
Since its invention in 1839, photography has served as a medium for documenting, understanding, and interpreting the world. Photography is the perfect tool for doing exactly what I love, capturing the beauty in our planet. I got my first camera when I was eight years old and as soon as I was able to make a steady income (a long, long while afterwards) bought my first SLR. In 1994, I landed in the US with a fellowship to do research at the National Institutes of Health but with a “secret agenda” too. Visit all the national parks and experience first hand some of the images I have seen taken by others. But why would I limit myself to the national parks in the US when the entire planet is beautiful? And why would I limit myself to nature photographs when human beings are also able to create beautiful things?
I love to explore, experience new things, getting lost but, at the same time, being in touch with my surroundings. I also love shooting people and capture their essence, personality and emotions. Ansel is totally right. For those of us who like to make photographs, we seek to freeze a moment in time to share a story and our emotions and experiences. Photography is a never-ending process of learning and the perfect outlet for curiosity and inspiration. I seek inspiration in the masterpieces of many photographers including Ansel Adams, Arthur Morris, Art Wolf and painters like Georgia O’Keeffe.
I am a member of the New York Institute of Photography and the Professional Photographers of America. I am also member of nature groups like the New Jersey Audubon and a hike leader for the Appalachian Mountain club.
So here is my website; I hope you will find something you enjoy. Please feel free to reach out to me and share your feedback.
