This cute wild desert rabbit was playing hide and seek when I was scouting the Hall Of Horrors area at Joshua Tree NP. The desert cottontail is quite similar in appearance to the European rabbit, though its ears are larger and are more often carried erect. It is social among its peers, often gathering in small groups to feed. Like all cottontail rabbits, the desert cottontail has a greyish-brown, rounded tail with a broad white edge and white underside, which is visible as it runs away.It also has white fur on the belly.
Who can resist this look and smile? This chipmunk seems torn between paying attention to me or finishing the nut he is holding, maybe wondering if I am going to use my big scary telephoto lens to take his meal away.... Chipmunks are small, striped rodents of the family Sciuridae. This species of Chipmunks is found in North America and they have an omnivorous diet primarily consisting of seeds, nuts and other fruits, and buds. Chipmunks typically live about three years although some have been observed living to nine years in captivity in which case they are said to sleep for an average of about 15 hours a day….. no need to search for food I guess!
The rock squirrel (Otospermophilus variegatus) is a species of rodent in the family Sciuridae and is native to Mexico and the southwestern United States.
